Enchanted gardens

Well thought out from the start, they are a journey without end, gently bringing peace, joy and infinite well-being. The landscape architect plays a key role in this high-flying exercise by specifying, structuring and underpinning the painting that appears before our eyes every day, avoiding mistakes and creating the environment that suits us. For many years, Régis Devallée has been known as one of the best examples of this.

Temperatures rise. The air softens. And soon all signals are green, we are determinedly in “garden mode”. The idea of spending beautiful afternoons of laziness there, organising big festive dinners or chatting for hours, captures the imagination. To make the dream come true, there is nothing better than a landscape architect like Régis Devallée, who 30 years ago took over the company founded in 1969 by Christian Devallée and for a decade has run the now Devallée SA alone. We are talking about a tradition of excellence handed down from father to son, about experience, craftsmanship and enchanting passion.

Creator of exceptional gardens

From the surroundings of a castle, a hospital or offices to an urban garden sandwiched between two walls, from large green spaces to intimate corners, these green cocoons always elevate the natural elements present in the environment. Inspired by Japanese gardens that emphasise structures and textures, as well as the nuances of greenery, but also by Brazilian Roberto Burle Marx, a proponent of modernist landscapes, known for his parks and gardens, Régis Devallée visualises his creations as extensions of the interiors of houses, with axes and vistas that lead to them, but often betray nothing of the various scenes hidden there, inviting surprising and highly enjoyable discoveries or walks.

A unique feature

At the heart of the approach is an emblematic material: Belgian bluestone. It is a symbol of quality and durability, an aesthetic choice, but also a strong commitment to a local product. The stone is taken directly from the quarries and the slabs are cut at Devallée SA to perfectly match the projects. The slabs are immortalised in tiles on elegant terraces, beautiful paths winding through vegetation, intriguing entrances or decorative retaining walls.

A partner of choice

Corten steel – an alloy of steel and various elements that increases resistance to corrosion by forming a protective rust layer – is another surprising asset, bringing the surrounding greenery to life with its flamboyant colour. Not only does it fit well with both old and modern facades, it is also very malleable and can easily be bent or folded to highlight or structure a space. It is highly decorative, but can also be used as a simple privacy screen and has become one of the distinguishing features of Régis Devallée’s gardens over the years. “The decor of houses and terraces, which are often rectilinear, can be softened by the organic forms that Corten steel can take, such as the Osmanthus with its beautiful, fragrant white flowers cut into clouds, contrasted with shrubs with a finely defined natural habit.”

The right time to design your garden

It’s a recurring question. When is the right time to build a garden or carry out thorough renovations? “It’s a tricky question,” admits Régis Devallée, “because it depends on the size of the project. If it is a small project, you can think about it at the end of winter and continue with the planting in spring. On the other hand, if it is a large-scale creation, the concept has to mature and it may take a year before it becomes a reality, because it is always necessary to wait for the right season, with planting taking place from October to March-April.” Properly thought out, each garden is a work of art in the making, contributing to biodiversity and changing from season to season, for the enjoyment of happy owners and future generations.
