The bathroom is one of the places where we are at our most relaxed. In 2024, it is even more: a canvas for creativity and personal expression. From bold stones to quirky colour palettes, innovative concepts and environmentally conscious design. The intention? To create a unique space that celebrates sustainability, authenticity and imperfect perfection. Minimalism still plays a role, but there is just as much space for a counter-reaction with adventurous textures, structures and unexpected combinations. For example, Laufen integrated Kartell’s iconic and colourful design into a prestigious bathroom project. Out-of-the-box, but what could be better than fusing the flair of Italian design elements with the quality of a leading Swiss bathroom manufacturer? It should never appear too slick, however. From ceramics to furniture and taps, the modular colour concept is also blurring the traditional boundaries of design this year, in a push for more diversity and individuality. Time for a look at the bathroom trends of 2024, where aesthetics and functionality come together harmoniously.
QUIET LUXURY
Luxurious products, spacious feel and restful radiance. The thoughtful aesthetics of hotel-style bathrooms are gaining ground in domestic interiors. This includes innovative, layered lighting solutions – where everything can be used simultaneously or separately – to enhance the mood and energy of a room. From general lighting for the morning shower to task lighting beside the mirror for personal care, or an atmospheric mirror glow for the bedtime routine.
Primary colours red, yellow and blue – freshly glazed or raw oxidised – reveal their charms in the bathroom too. From a quirky artful Mondrian colour palette with dark walnut accents and colour-rich ceramics, to intriguing tone-on-tone combinations for the viewing area, taps, bathroom furniture and accessories. For instance, Villeroy & Boch introduce decorative, top-mounted washbasins in ten BiColour hues with its Artis collection – harmoniously blending into any quirky colour palette, including bold textures and expressive design. Bye-bye white bathroom.
TRAVERTIN TOUCH DOWN
While natural stone in the bathroom has long been a popular choice, demand for it has never been higher. The range is becoming increasingly diverse, transcending traditional materials and standard solutions. Yet the sand-coloured natural stone travertine retains its prominent place in numerous interior design projects. The East Flanders company Potier Stone have a key role as experts in natural stone. And Cosentino recently introduced the Silestone Le Chic collection, featuring Versailles Ivory as a paragon of Palace-of-Versailles grandeur.
From clean lines to playful relief on furniture, shower walls, basins and taps – even on doors and walls. Bathrooms are featuring a lot of art deco textures this year, adding character and visual interest. Vertical lines are particularly popular, but you will also notice horizontal lines or even a retro herringbone pattern here and there. Kast, a British specialist in the design and production of contemporary concrete basins, has launched a range of minimalist sinks, with surface patterns on the outside. A showpiece for any bathroom? The curved free-standing Aura Pedestal, available in 28 colours.
FONCTIONNALITÉ SOBRE
We are living in increasingly and smaller spaces, increasing the demand for functional solutions in bathrooms. But that does not mean compromising on design or quality. Sand – an exclusive range for compact bathrooms – is Facq and Detremmerie’s sustainable, practical and visually striking solution. Sand features shallow furniture with drawers, open frames and surface-mounted basins in top-quality solid surface or ceramic. Matching mirrors and mirror cabinets ensure unity and ambiance. Soft, sand-coloured tones dominate – exactly on the current tone-on-tone trend. And the collection also has darker tones for those who prefer stronger contrasts. Butho Bath also successfully taps into the understated tone-on-tone look with the Kairu collection, where functional elegance and geometric lines are the code words.
IMPRESSIVELY ELEGANT
Many people may prefer a powerful shower to start a busy day, but there is no denying the aesthetic impact of a beautiful free-standing bath, or the therapeutic benefits of a long soak. The free-standing bathtub will become a showpiece in many bathrooms this year, thanks its flexibility and the growing influence of spa design on home bathrooms. Here, Villeroy & Boch’s Theano free-standing baths are distinguished by a subtly monolithic design with thin side walls and high-quality facets on the bath rim. Made of acrylic or Quaryl, they are easy to clean and with the colour-on-demand option you can give your bathroom a personalised look. Achieve maximum colourway effects with tone-on-tone combinations, or for a more expressive contrast, with dark-tiled walls. Looking for more tranquillity? Dare to opt for organic shapes. Their asymmetrical character recalls natural forms, where straight lines never actually occur. They not only bring softness to the bathroom, but also a playful touch.
In 2024, tiles are leaving their functional role behind to take their place as artistic bathroom decoration. Whether it is an elaborately patterned back wall, a striking floor or subtle nuances, they define the visual impact of a bathroom. Use bathroom tile trends in that match your colour scheme to make the right and, above all, personal design statement.
Unwinding in a stylish space? 2024 finds us in a comfortable home spa, where neutral colours, earth tones and natural materials set the mood. On the radar: spacious walk-in showers, rain shower heads, private whirlpool systems or even an outdoor shower with the requisite spa accessories. Dornbracht, for instance, is introducing high-quality taps into its Vaia range, featuring a dark platinum, matt finish. Cosentino brought in interior designer Claudia Afshar to create the unique Ukiyo range: an exploration of textures and geometric shapes that brings contemporary spaces to life with linearity and depth.
SECRET RENDEZ-VOUS
Sustainability is the buzzword in the bathroom designs of 2024 – most clearly evident in smart, water-saving fittings. From hands-free taps to intelligent showers: there are options to adjust water temperature, flow rate and even timing. But sustainable design also has its luxuries, for example, at this year’s Salone Del Mobile Milano, GROHE SPA presented a new range of mad- to-measure luxury taps. Their quartz handles are by Belgian surface specialist Caesarstone and look destined to become showpieces for architects and designers to integrate in black-marbled, or dark-green, deeply veined marbled bathrooms. These intense shades exude luxury and sophistication – just what we are looking for in spa-at-home or a relaxing ablution moments.
