Perfect combination of design and historical furniture

Renovated by the Sicilian-born owner, this discreet house, hidden away at the heart of the Eternal City, boasts two contrasting souls. It reveals unexpected associations of modern design with historical furniture and plays with contrasting materials to produce an element of surprise. While the main living room is structured by the rigorous lines of the two Grand Soffice sofas, designed by Francesco Binfaré, with Masanori Umeda’s Getsuen and Rose Chair armchairs dotted here and there, the classic-style dining room table is matched with Jacopo Foggini’s Ella Gold armchairs. Made of polycarbonate and shaped by hand like sculptures, they play with natural and artificial light. Their shells evoke the shape of a flower, echoing those of the post-modern style armchairs in the Flowers Collection.

When furniture becomes architecture

In this home with its country house atmosphere standing right in the middle of the city, a listed building to boot, the spaces are spread over several buildings. They open out onto the different strata of Rome, its monuments and archaeological ruins with a view of the Altare della Patria, a white marble building backing onto the Capitol. The armchairs in the shape of lilies and roses interact with the labyrinth of artfully clipped hedges and the orangery.

The billiard room plays host to the Grand Soffice sofa, chosen in a soft shade of grey and characterised by its substantial volume and voluptuous comfort. Its upholstery is made up of a mixture of Gellyfoam® and a large quantity of goose feathers, while the intelligent cushions come with reclining backs. Its creator, Francesco Binfaré, describes it as follows: “It is a sculpture that enters the home like a monument, an obelisk or a cathedral enters the urban space. It is itself an architecture, a primordial and sophisticated den“.

Stylish and warm spaces

In the kitchen, the Gilda B monocoque chairs, made of polycarbonate, have been teamed with the terracotta tile floor and the ceiling with its dark wood beams. Their transparent and azure blue material adds a lighter touch alongside the imposing presence of traditional rustic materials, furniture and objects that are either family heirlooms or finds brought back from travels abroad. This brick construction is also the setting for the On The Rocks sofa. Without a rigid structure and made up of 4 autonomous elements (3 polygons and a quadrilateral), it can be adapted to any configuration of the space, thanks to its composable geometry. The Gellyfoam® upholstery, combined with other types of foam, provides an extraordinarily comfortable seat while its backs are held in place invisibly by brake discs hidden in the Lycra base of the cover. Revisiting in a modern way the principle of the double Confident or Conversation armchair, as it was known when created in France during the Second Empire, it allows several people sitting in opposite directions to converse, without turning their heads. The exclusive 3D soft upholstery, with its unique feel, in turn evokes a mineral texture. Accompanying this creation, which once again pays homage to the beauty of nature, are Jacopo Foggini’s Cicladi tables with tops carved from a raw block of alabaster. With their jagged, irregular outline, reminiscent of an island seen from the sky, they stand out like a work of art.

The A’mare collection by Jacopo Foggini, Edra’s first outdoor furniture line, with elements made of polycarbonate and glass slats, is perfectly integrated into the outdoor environment. Their almost aquatic material, evoking the fluidity and transparency of sea water, is illuminated by infinite nuances. A sensitive and artisanal approach has been adopted, combined with cutting-edge technology, to create furniture made to last, perfectly reflecting this residence that has stood the test of time to offer a degree of comfort adapted to today’s lifestyle.
